How to be happy:

  1. Be grateful - instead of looking at all the bad stuff, focus on everything good that you can find. For example, if it rains, instead of saying "I can't go outside and play," say "The plants must be really thirsty." If you have a bad day at work, think how much worse it would be if you didn't have a job and lived on the street! There's always something worse that might happen, so be grateful for every little positive thing
  2. Be mindful - instead of living in the past complaining about all the bad things that happened or living in the future worrying about what might happen someday, live in the here and now. Focus your attention on things around you and really enjoy life - try the "10 Things" game where you take a deep, cleansing breath and think of 10 things you can see/hear/smell/touch (you can do taste if you're eating something, but don't go around licking things to see how they taste - people look at you really oddly if you do that!)
  3. Smile - just the act of turning your lips up instead of down makes your brain turn on the "happy hormones" that make you feel better (true fact - the brain "assumes" you must be happy since you're smiling, so it makes sure you feel good). Also, a smile makes other people smile back, and smiles are contagious, so you'll soon be smiling for real!
  4. Do something for someone else - one of the best ways to make yourself feel better is to be helpful and kind to others. Don't try to see what you can get out of it, though - just be kind and helpful for its own sake. You can use the good karma, anyhow!
  5. Count your blessings - this is a variation on "be grateful" in that you actually write out everything in your life that is good and post them somewhere you can see them every day to remind yourself of specific things you have going for you. It's like your own personal motivational poster.
