No one knows exactly when the world was created.

But according to The Bible, it was created about 6,000 years ago.

According to traditional (Hebrew calendar) reckoning, the Creation was in the year corresponding to 3760 BC (the 14-lunar-month Hebrew year 5760 began on the evening of September 10, 1999 and ended on September 29, 2000 AD).

The Bible tells us: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Gen.1:1)

Then, it says that the earth was destroyed by something[it doesn't say what]. It became (a formless void{tohuw and bohuw}; a desolation, a worthless thing... a vaccum, an indistinguishable ruin - Strong's Definitions).

Up to this point in the account... no time frame is mentioned regarding WHEN God first made the universe and the earth, or how much time passed between the original creation and WHEN the earth was destroyed.

In other words: an unspecified period of time passed between verses 1 & 2 of Genesis 1.

The "creation" account that follows these verses is God's SIX-DAY REMAKE of the earth to sustain man, followed by the "seventh-day Sabbath;" a recurring seven-day cycle God made for man to "remember creation" and to not forget Him.

That said... the fact is, that TIME IS PHYSICAL... based on the "movements of the planets" -- their rotations and orbits. The movements of the stars as observed from a fixed point [in man's case, his fixed point on earth].

In other words... before God created the universe and set the planets into motion -- THERE WAS NO TIME! Only "eternity" -- timelessness. Which is difficult [if not impossible] for flesh and blood man to comprehend... being so subject to time and its physical effects on him.

The Bible doesn't say "how long" it took God to create the universe and the earth... how long it took to "compress spirit [energy] into matter." Or how it was all finally "set in motion." Because until He did set it into motion... there wasn't any time.

"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell Me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?" (Job 38:4-5 NIV)

All we know [from observing the universe] is that it's all "running down" [the nuclear clock is ticking] -- which necessitates that there was a "point in time" when both "time and the universe began."

Therefore... "the year" that the universe and the earth were created and "set in motion"... was the year that "time began": YEAR ONE.

Additional Comment:

Concerning the renewal of the Earth and the now 'Reign of Man,' writing in the 17th Century, Archbishop James Ussher of Armagh, Ireland, added up the genealogies of Genesis and concluded that Adam was created in 4004 BC - 4000 years before Jesus' birth.
