Socrates was a philosopher who lived in Athens, Greece from 469 to 399 BC. He wrote nothing, but had many students and exerted an enormous influence on all later Greek philosophy. Socrates, whose honest questioning antagonized many prominent citizens, was executed by the Athenian government, being made to drink hemlock.

Plato (424 to 347 BC) was the most illustrious student of Socrates. He wrote many dialogues, many featuring Socrates as the leading character. Plato's works potentially contain many of Socrates' teachings, but also many original contributions by Plato. Plato's influence is enormous. As one modern philosopher put it, all subsequent philosophy might be considered a mere footnote to Plato.

Aristotle (384 to 322 BC) was Plato's most accomplished student.
