Meriwether Lewis had a mental disorder. He was very moody, introverted, what people back then called "melancholic" and Jefferson described him as having "hypochonriac afflictions" A hypochondriac is a person who has a "health phobia" or constantly has this worry about whether or not they are sick or going to be sick. He may have had bi-polar disorder or chronic depression. Like I said, its a mental disorder and there isn't any "single" cause for it, although I believe most scientists today describe it as a chemical imbalance, but don't quote me on that. But he was certainly like that long before the expedition.
