Potential energy
The pencil resting on a desk has potential energy due to its position in the gravitational field.
The potential energy of the pencil is being converted to kinetic energy as it falls due to gravity.
The energy involved is primarily gravitational potential energy. As the pencil falls, this potential energy is converted into kinetic energy.
Gravity pulls the pencil downward towards the desk, creating a force that helps keep it balanced when not being moved by an external force. Other factors, such as the friction between the desk and the pencil, also play a role in keeping it stable.
A pencil getting knocked off the desk is an unbalanced force. The force of the object hitting the pencil is greater than the force of gravity keeping it on the desk, causing it to fall.

It's a question asking: Is there a pencil on the desk. Usually means in the desk, so it would be: Is there a pencil in the desk.
I have a pencil in (meaning on) my desk. Tengo un lapiz en mi escritorio/pupitre/carpeta (alternatives for 'desk') I have a pencil in[side] my desk Tengo un lapiz dentro de mi escritorio.

It is called the mechanical pencil!
probably at his desk.
on the desk :-D

Why this is in the jokes and riddles section is beyond me. Anyhow, when a student taps his pencil on a desk, the impact causes the pencil and the desk to vibrate. This vibration also causes the air to vibrate, and vibrations in the air = sound!
