Distance and displacement are both measured in the same units (metres in SI units). The difference is that distance measures exactly how far something has travelled while displacemnt measures how far something is from where it started. e.g. If you travel 400m in a straight line your displacement and distance are both 400m but if you travel 400m around an athletics track your distance is 400m but your distance is 0m because you are back where you started.

∙ 13y agoDistance is a "scalar". A scalar is a mathematical idea used to explain something in terms of its magnitude. On the other side, displacement is a "vector". Vector is a mathematical term used to describe something with both magnitude and direction. When you say "I ran 1 mile today.", you are describing distance. When you say "I ran 1 mile South." you are describing displacement.
