There are several ways.
1. Stroke the needle in one direction, with another magnet.
2. Place it in a coil of wire and pass a large (DC) current through the coil for a few seconds. (This is how they would do it commercially)
3. Align the needle with the magnetic north/south direction, now hit it several times. It will eventually take on the earths magnetic field as it's own.
