Energy from the ocean, also known as tidal energy, when tidal changes in sea level can be used to generate electricity by constructing dams across coastal bays or estuaries. You can capture the energy from oceans:

  • Using a tidal dam or barrage, that uses gravity and the advancing and retreating tide waters to spin turbines driving alternators.
  • Using wave motion machines, sometimes floating, sometimes on the sea bed, which capture the vertical and horizontal movement of the waves to produce electricity by rotating alternators inside the machines.
  • Using ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC),where systems use warm surface water to boil a liquid like ammonia, the resultant gas of which drives electricity turbines. Cold water from the deep is pumped up to cool the gas into liquid again, and the cycle continues.
  • Use underseatidal turbines, rather like wind-turbines and their alternators, but mounted on the sea-bed and driven by the tidal flows.
