Several methods can be employed to measure porosity, including the volume/density method (pore volume = total volume - material volume), water saturation method (pore volume = total volume of water - unsaturated water), water evaporation method (pore volume in cubic centimeters = weight of saturated sample in grams - weight of dried sample in grams), Mercury intrusion porosimetry (several non-mercury intrusion techniques have been developed due to toxicological concerns, and the fact that mercury tends to form amalgams with several metals/alloys), and nitrogen gas adsorption (nitrogen gas adsorption in pores is measured either by volume or weight. This technique is suitable for materials with very fine pores).

What rock is the highest porosity?

Pumice or some variant thereof. Pumice floats on water also, and is an ingredient in certain exfoliating soaps. It comes in many varieties, and is classified as an Igneous rock.

Porosity tests are carried out to assess the condition of the cuticle layer of the hair.

Are igneous rocks porous?

Igneous rocks generally have extremely low porosity. An exception is pumice, which has abundant vesicles and therefore is very porous (though not permeable).

Why pumice is porous?

Pumice forms when a volcano erupts gas-rich material. Some of this material forms a sort of foamy lava, filled with gas bubbles. This cools rapidly and solidifies with the bubbles left in place, forming a highly porous rock. In volcanic rock this texture is called vesicular.

What stone float in water?

Pumice, a volcanic stone with tiny air bubbles, is the only stone that floats in water.Pumice.Pumice, a volcanic porous stone, is lighter than water of equal volume because of all of the air bubbles in it, so it floats.

When you rub a pumice rock on a streak plate what color is left on the streak plate?

The streak test is really only useful in mineral identification, not for combinations of them as with pumice.
