Like electrical charges (such as 2 positives or 2 negatives) repel each other- they push away from one another. An electroscope has two leaves of light metal foil, arranged so that they can swing apart. When the same electrical charge is applied to both leaves, they push away from each other. Over a period of time, the charge will bleed off, and the leaves swing back towards each other.
