Some atoms get extra electrons. They have a negative charge. Other atoms lose electrons. They have a positive charge. When charges are separated like this, it is called static electricity.=

Due to a law called conservation of charge, you can't create charges. However, you can separate them - electrons can be taken away from atoms, leaving the atoms with a positive charge; and the electrons, of course, have a negative charge.
