These are the transition elements found between groups 2A and 3A of the Periodic Table. In general chemistry we speak of the first transition series (i.e. Scandium to Zinc - though Zinc is not always considered to be a true transition element); the second transition series (Ytterium to Cadmium) and the third transition series (Lanthanum to Mercury).
Transition metals and their compounds find frequent use as industrial catalysts. Many of their compounds are coloured and they also have multiple valencies (that's why Zinc is not always considered a transition metal).
Iron is unique among the elements because it is essential for many biological processes in living organisms, such as oxygen transport in the blood and energy production in cells.
By the year 1700, about 13 elements had been identified, including carbon, sulfur, copper, iron, and mercury.
Light, and the entire electro-magnetic spectrum, is made up of photons, which are not elements. Electricity is composed of energized electrons - again, not elements. Lastly, gravity, the strong, and the weak forces are not made of elements (if they are made of things at all).
passive elements
Yes, elements can change into different elements when they decay, but they do not disappear completely.
