These are the transition elements found between groups 2A and 3A of the Periodic Table. In general chemistry we speak of the first transition series (i.e. Scandium to Zinc - though Zinc is not always considered to be a true transition element); the second transition series (Ytterium to Cadmium) and the third transition series (Lanthanum to Mercury).

Transition metals and their compounds find frequent use as industrial catalysts. Many of their compounds are coloured and they also have multiple valencies (that's why Zinc is not always considered a transition metal).
