As sound traverses through air medium it would not push the particles coming on the way. It is just like water waves on the surface not dragging along with it any material floating. Due to wave propagation small bits of paper would go up and down and not getting dragged with the wripples. Hence sound is considered as wave

Why are sound waves classified as longitudinal waves?

Sound waves are classified as longitudinal waves because the particles of the medium move back and forth in the same direction as the wave is traveling. This means that the oscillations are parallel to the direction of wave propagation. In contrast, transverse waves have particle motion perpendicular to the direction of wave travel.
