Only partly true. While it is true that starlight provides barely enough light to see other objects, you would still be able to see your suit by the dark areas with no stars.

To be honest, our human eyes are marvelously sensitive to even the dimmest light; unless your suit was itself flat black, you should be able to see at least the outlines.

Plus, your suit would have electric lights that would allow you to see anything you were working on, and the spaceship itself would have lights.
