It had better be! Otherwise, nothing could ever start sliding ... as soon as your

pull on the string becomes strong enough for the object to break free of the

static friction and begin to slide, the force of kinetic friction would take over,

and it would suddenly be even stronger!

USUALLY, static friction is larger than kinetic friction.

Why?

Static Friction is the force that opposes forces that try to set the object into motion. (only happens when the object is still / at rest)

Kinetic friction is the force that opposes the object when it IS in motion.

Yes, the coefficient of static friction is always higher than the coefficient of sliding friction.

Yes. Think about it this way. If rolling friction were greater than sliding friction we would not use wheels. We would just drag objects from place to place.

Is static friction or sliding friction stronger?

Static friction

What are different forms of friction?

Static friction and sliding friction. Static friction is the force that stops a mass from sliding and sliding friction is the force that slows down an object that is already sliding. Static friction is stronger than sliding friction, and this difference is reflected in different coefficients of friction for sliding and static friction for a given surface.

What are the four types of friction?

static, rolling, fluid, and sliding friction

Define sliding friction and rolling friction?

sliding friction is less than static friction. it is also very easy to move better than static friction.

What are Different between static friction and sliding friction and rolling friction?

Friction is a force between to surfaces that resists motion. Static friction is the resistance to motion when two surfaces are not moving relative to each other. Sliding friction is the resistance to motion when two surface are sliding, one over the other. Sliding friction is less than static friction for the same two surfaces. For rolling friction an object is rolling, like a tire on a road. It's what provides traction between the two and makes the car "go." For a tire on a road, rolling friction is less than sliding friction.

Is rolling friction greater than sliding friction?

Typically not. However rolling friction is somewhat of a myth. Rolling friction is actually caused by static friction. There are really only two types of friction: Static and Kinetic. That's it! Rolling friction is caused by static friction and the coefficient of friction (which determines its strength) is dependent upon the two materials of interaction.

What are the three types of friction and when does each apply?

There are three types of friction, static friction, rolling friction, and sliding friction. Static friction is friction between two surfaces that aren't moving relatively to each other. Rolling friction is friction between a rolling object and the surface that it is rolling on. Sliding friction is friction where an object slides, or rubs against, another surface.

What is the strongest type of friction?

There are four types of friction: Fluid Friction (The friction caused by falling through air or water, or any other liquid etc), rolling friction (Like a ball rolling across the floor), static friction (The force it takes to begin something's movement), and sliding friction(Like pushing a box across the floor). In order of strongest to weakest it's Static, Sliding, Rolling, Fluid.
