Tuesday, October 21, 2008Chartreuse Is The Most Visible Color For Humans

Yellowish green, chartreuse, is naturally placed right in the middle of the frequencies of visible light. Human eyes have receptors for green, blue and red colors. Being placed in the middle, chartreuse actuates the most of these receptors to fire, making it distinct and easier to spot. For the same reason, in some metropolises, firetrucks have been modified from red to a yellowish green color to make them more visible and obvious to the eye.

"The human eye can see visible light from deep red to near violet. However there are some colours that the human eye sees better than other. Humans see yellow rather well. Yellow is that peak frequency of the sun (there is more yellow light than anything else) so it makes sense for the eye to specialize on that colour. Blue is also a colour that the eye detects well. Surprisingly Green is not as well seen (despite there being so much of it in foliage). For this reason there are no green stars seen. We see red, orange, yellow and blue stars but not green. Now there are green stars but because we don't see green very well they aren't popular."

Actually, the human eye cannot discern true yellow light well. The cone receptors in the eye respond to red, green, and blue, and other colors in the visible spectrum such as yellow, magenta, and cyan are interpreted by the eye as linear combinations of red, green, and blue. Thus when you perceive something as yellow, the light entering your eye has a high intensity of red and green light and low intensity of blue light.

Also, the peak frequency of the sun is green, not yellow. Even though the true "color" of the sun is white because it radiates the full spectrum of colors at very high intensities, the reason why it appears yellow to some people is because the atmosphere scatters a lot of blue light (take blue light away from white and you get red and green, which we interpret as yellow).

Visible light is visible (for the human eye), infrared is not. Infrared has a longer wavelength, and a higher frequency. visible light is visible to human i.e the VIBGYOR, above vibgyor are ultravoilet light which is not visible to human eye and below vibgyor are infrared light which is also not visible to human eye.
