Friction creates heat, which could be harmful or useful. People could not walk without friction keeping them from sliding. Friction is what makes the brakes work on a car, bicycle, or any other kind of vehicle. It also makes motors overheat sometimes, which is harmful. It would be impossible to catch a football, ice skate, run, or do countless other things without friction. Friction is far more useful than it is harmful, and people have found ways to reduce molst of the harmful effects by doing such things as putting lubrication oil on bearing surfaces and in car engines. The space shuttles have special tiles attached to their nose sections to prevent overheating damage from friction when reentering Earth's atmosphere.
