Virtual images have light rays which diverge as if they had come from points behind the source. Hence a screen will just be illuminated with unfocussed light. The images is then sent via through the optic nerve (Cranial Nerve II) to the optic chiasma. This is where the images are then "crossed" so that the brain processes the appropriate information for each eye's visual field (so the eye corresponds images in left eye with the left side of the body).
