Vibrating
Sound energy is in the form of a wave.

Yes they do need particles to travel through!
Sound is considered to be a type of kinetic energy because it is a form of energy that is produced by the movement of objects or particles. Kinetic energy is any energy that is in motion and sound is produced by the vibrational motion of particles. The energy of sound is created by the movement of air particles which are set in motion by a vibrating object. This vibration produces sound waves which travel through the air until they reach our ears. Sound is an example of kinetic energy because it requires motion to be produced. This motion is created by the vibration of an object which causes molecules in the air to vibrate or oscillate. This vibration is then picked up by our ears and interpreted as sound. The energy of the sound is a result of this vibration and is therefore considered a form of kinetic energy. Sound is also considered a type of kinetic energy because it carries energy with it as it moves through space. This energy is in the form of sound waves which are created by the vibration of objects and particles. As the sound waves move they carry energy with them which can be converted into other forms of energy. This is why sound is considered to be a form of kinetic energy.
Sound energy is in the form of a wave.
Sound energy causes the particles in the medium it is traveling through to vibrate. The medium is a solid, liquid or gas.
Sound is, in its most basic form, a vibration of particles. Sound energy, then, is carried from one place to another by the transmission of vibrations from particles to surrounding particles.
sound energy is formed by a vibrating body. We can say that sound is produced only when a body is vibrating.

Sound travels by particles (such as atoms or molecules) bumping into other particles, thus transferring the energy, in form of a sound.
Both Light and Sound are different forms of energy. But light is formed of a particle called photon, whereas Sound is nothing but a mere force;it doesn't consist of any particles of its own. That is why Sounds needs a medium to travel and hard objects like wall, metal etc cannot stop it.The energy produced while making a sound passes through the particles of its medium, causing sensation which moves the particles of that medium parallel to the direction of the sound.Light is completely different from sound. It travels like a wave; these waves are caused by the perpendicular motion of the photons to its direction. Since light is formed of particles it cannot pass through the hard object like sound does.
