The loudness has to do with the sound field quantity called sound pressure or sound pressure level (SPL). The sound intensity or acoustic intensity means the sound energy quantity. Our ears and the microphone diaphragms are moved by the sound pressure variations.

If you listen to music, avoid the word intensity, because your eardrums are moved by the sound pressure wave in the the air. A sound pressure level meter (SPL) uses the sound pressure too. Sound pressure is a sound field quantity. If you are a noise fighter, then you use the word sound intensity for your calculations of your sound barriers. Sound intensity is a sound energy quantity. Sound intensity is not sound pressure.

Sound intensity is force divided by area. That is a sound energy quantity. The loudness has to do with the sound field quantity called sound pressure or sound pressure level (SPL). The sound intensity or acoustic intensity means the sound energy quantity. Our ears and the microphone diaphragms are moved by the sound pressure variations.

What does amplitude of a sound wave determine?

Amplitude is the volume of the sound in sound waves. The higher the Amplitude, the louder is the sound. Sound waves are pressure or compression waves in the material through which the sound is traveling. The pressure or compression waves also result in small longitudinal displacements of the atoms or molecules. The amplitude of the sound wave determines the range of variation of pressure, compression, or displacement.
