Short term (dams),
- it provides electricity,
- it makes jobs, and fishy
- at some elevated risk from catastrophic failure of the dam.
Long term (dams),
- it affects migration patterns of fish (which can be mitigated in many cases),
- it allows for settling of sediments behind the dam (some of which are radioactive),
- it adds additional weight on the fault lines that form most river valleys (increasing the risk of a catastrophic upheaval),
- it allows for the water to be heated, stagnant, and depleted of much oxygen, such that releases are essentially dead and somewhat toxic,
- it increases the evaporation to the atmosphere and suppression of water into the water table, reducing available surface water, and reducing its quality.
The nice thing about beavers, is their dams go away fairly quickly, leaving nice flat farmland.
Tidal / wave generation seems to have none of these bad issues...
