Hydroelectric energy comes from the movement of water (the prefix "hydro-" means water.) Any transfer of energy from water movement to anything electrical or mechanical is a form of hydroelectric energy. The best examples are dams. A dam blocks moving water and forces it through a confined space, where it can do mechanical work or be converted to electrical work. Another example could be a mill wheel being used to grind corn.
