Frictional force arises due to irregularities present on the surfaces in contact. Even if the surfaces in contact appear smooth to naked eye, but at microscopic level their unevenness is cleary visible. When two surfaces are in contact, the uppermost layer of atoms or molecules on the surfaces intercept eachother due to weak inter-molecular attractive forces and the normal reaction force. These forces give rise to frictional force which is also dependent on coefficient of friction.

Force that act on object that are not moving?

The force that acts on objects that are not moving is static friction. Static friction prevents the object from moving when a force is applied to it, until the force overcomes the static friction and causes motion.

How does friction affect forward motion?

Friction is when two objects touch each other, either smooth or rough friction causes the object to slow down. Also an unbalanced force is when the net force isn't 0 which causes a object to move and cause friction other than a balanced force is when the net force is 0.

What type of force opposes motion and causes objects to slow down?

The unbalanced force that stops almost everything is?

The force you are referring to is friction. Friction opposes motion and causes objects to slow down and eventually come to a stop.

How is friction defined scientifically?

Friction is a force present when things rub against eachother. Friction causes heat energy, and it also causes motion between surfaces to be reduced.

Why is friction a force?

Friction is considered a force because it acts on an item and causes changes, which is what a force is. Nothing would happen if the item was in an area where friction was not possible or if friction was where an object was not since they need each other to exert external effort.

What type of force causes an object t start moving?
