Prefixes.

In systematic nomerclature, the number is indicated by a prefix before the name of each element: "mono" for 1, "di" for 2, "tri" for three, "tetra" for four, "penta" for five, etc. If the name of the element begins with a vowel, the final vowel of the prefix is omitted, and the "mono" prefix may be omitted in many instances.

Examples: N2O is named "dinitrogen monoxide"; NO2 is named "mononitrogen dioxide"; and N2O5 is named "dinitrogen pentoxide".

Informally, the prefix before the more electropositive element is often omitted and sometimes both prefixes are omitted if the elements can form only one binary molecular compound. Thus, Al2O3 should formally be called "dialuminum trioxide" but in fact is often called simply "aluminum oxide".
