Static friction resists an object from moving when at rest (still) with respect to the surface it is resting on or in contact with. Kinetic friction, or dynamic friction, (normally what we think of when we say 'friction') describes the friction that occurs when one body moves relative to another body and when both bodies are in contact with each other.

What are friction materials?

friction materials are the one which help in inducing friction to a friction-less object, like brake lining on the brake shoe is used for inducing friction between the brake shoe and the inner rim of the wheel.

What are some examples of how friction can affect motion?

Take the invention known as a brake. It stops motion. Because friction causes drag, putting friction on one side of a moving object and not on another will cause the object to veer towards the side with friction. That is the principal behind the rudder used in boats.
