The ideal gas equation indicates that decreasing the temperature causes a reduction in its volume. When a gas is cooled down, the atoms comprising the gas have less energy to move around. The atoms tend to condense and move closer together, causing them to occupy a less amount of space.

It will eventually turn into a liquid, then a solid.

The easiest way to look at it is like a fan. Wind blows outward from cold high pressure, the closer you are to the source the stronger it becomes. In a single cell model cold dense air will sink at the poles flow along the surface of the earth to the equator, the warmed air will rise up at the equator and flow through the air back to the poles where it sinks again. So, winter expands the mass of cold air at the poles allowing it to reach farther and come closer to you, bringing the fan closer. -ClAUdiA fEliX

well, the movement of the particles slow down causing it to lose its energy.

If your question is referring to the state of matter it depends on the element and the temperature, also what exactly does freezing temperature mean, the freezing point of water...what?
