Conduction, convection, and radiation are three modes of heat transfer.

  • In conduction the energy is transfer by the collision of molecules in adjacent regions - the more energetic molecules from the hotter surface bang against the molecules from the cooler region and impart some of their energy to the cooler ones - thus transferring heat.
  • In convection warmer material moves from one are to another where it mixes with the cooler material and raises the average energy (and thus temperature) of the cooler area - conversely if cooler material is moved into a region of higher temperature it can absorb heat from the warmer material.
  • In radiative heat transfer, the motion of molecules in their electrical fields cause the emission of electromagnetic radiation which can move through a vacuum until it intersects another mass which can absorb it , increasing the vibrational , rotational and even translational energy of the molecules - thus heat has been transferred.

What are the three forms of heat transfer?

The three forms of heat transfer are conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact of particles, convection is the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids or gases, and radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves.

How was radiation fundamentally different from conduction and convection how is radiation fundamentally different from conduction and convection?

Radiation differs from conduction and convection in that it does not require a medium to transfer thermal energy. Conduction transfers heat through direct contact between materials, while convection involves transferring heat through the movement of a fluid. Radiation can occur in a vacuum and does not rely on the movement of particles.

What is the Movement of thermal energy is called?

The movement of thermal energy is called heat transfer. Heat can be transferred through conduction (direct contact), convection (through a fluid such as air or water), or radiation (electromagnetic waves).
