Loadstone or loadstone is a naturally magnetised piece of the mineral magnetite. It's a naturally occurring magnet. 'Lodestone' means 'Leading stone' or 'Course stone' due to their use as magnets.

Lodestone is actually a stone with a high content of magnetized metal in it. In olden days, they'd float a piece of it on cork in a bowl with the compass points on it and used that for a compass - it would float to the North.

It's a naturally occurring magnetic compound. It was used in early compasses. Its magnetism is from the magnetite (Fe3O4) it contains.
