It is a device that holds or translates an object to very precise tolerances. Micropositioners have step resolution of 0.5-1µm (microns), with travel ranges of 10-50mm. They can be computer controlled (expensive) or manually controlled (less repeatability accuracy). If better resolution is desired, nanopositioners are available. These have a step resolution of 1nm (0.001µm), but a travel length of less than 1mm.
