It is used to measure blood pressure - it's the inflatable blood pressure cuff you see at the doctors.
Sphygmomanometer (the correct spelling).A Sphygmomanometer is an instrument used to measure an individuals indirect blood pressure. They generally consist of an inflatable cuff that fits around a limb (normally the arm, just above the elbow), a bulb for controlling air pressure within the cuff, and a mercury or aneroid manometer (a dial stating the pressure in millimeters of mercury, mmHg).
The sphygmomanometer was invented by Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch in 1881. His invention revolutionized the field of medicine by allowing for accurate measurement of blood pressure.
A sphygmomanometer or blood pressure meter (also referred to as a sphygmometer) is a device used to measure blood pressure, composed of an inflatable cuff to restrict blood flow, and a mercury or mechanical manometer to measure the pressure. It is always used in conjunction with a means to determine at what pressure blood flow is just starting, and at what pressure it is unimpeded. Manual sphygmomanometers are used in conjunction with a stethoscope. The device was invented by Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch in 1881. Scipione Riva-Rocci introduced a more easily used version in 1896. In 1901, Harvey Cushing modernized the device and popularized it within the medical community.
A sphygmomanometer measures blood pressure. It can be electronic or manual; the main difference being how much human interaction is required to measure blood pressure. With a manual sphygmomanometer, you observe the amount of pressure in the cuff in real-time (usually on a dial gauge) while listening for a bruit in an artery distal to the cuff. An electronic sphygmomanometer does the same thing, but it electronically listens for the bruit and generally displays the blood pressure reading after the measurement is completed. So with a manual sphygmo someone must watch a pressure gauge and listen for a bruit to be heard and when it stops to get a reading. An electronic sphygmo does all this automatically and gives a reading. An electronic sphygmo is more convenient and doesn't require as much training to use.
I believe that is the thing medical professionals use to get your blood pressure. It is the cuff, the rubber pump and the vertical scare that looks like a very big glass thermometer.

Sphygmomanometer.
Sphygmomanometers are used to check a patient's blood pressure. A sphygmomanometer is also simply called a blood pressure cuff.
False, because the apical pulse is the heartbeat and is heard with a stethoscope. The sphygmomanometer is used to take the pulse on the arm.
A sphygmomanometer is the gauge used for measuring blood pressure.
A sphygmomanometer is a device used to measure blood pressure. A more common name for this device is a blood pressure meter.
The instrument used to obtain blood pressure is a sphygmomanometer.
A sphygmomanometer, a device used to measure blood pressure, is typically used on the arm. It does not extend an individual's sense organ, but rather applies pressure to the arm to measure blood pressure.
