It's named after the French author Stendahl, who wrote about the overwhelming effect of the art in Florence. It can actually be a psychosomatic response, where you feel faint and your heart beats faster. But a milder version is the awe we experience as we take in supremely beautiful art, especially when faced with large numbers of objects.
