The real trouble is with *changing* speeds. As I'm sure you've noticed, sitting in, say, a rollercoaster while it's speeding up results in what feels like a strong force pushing you into the back of the car (actually, the car is pushing into you, but that's not important right now). Accelerations greater than about 9.8m/s2 are bad for your health if prolonged, and those greater than about 300m/s2 will kill you.
