A simple question, but the answer depends on whether it is a "real steel drum" as manufactured today, or an "oil barrel." I will explain.

A standard size for a steel drum is 55 gallons. So in this case 1 barrel = 55 gallons.

When used in context with oil, a barrel = 42 gallons. Oil is not shipped in barrels, but tankers and pipelines, so real oil barrels do not exist. However, it is an internationally accepted unit for oil volumes. So 55 gallons of oil = 55/42 = 1.31 barrels of oil (usually stated as bbls).

See related link, which gives conversions of the oil barrel in other units, such as imperial gallons.

As a final historical note, the unit of 42 gallons may seem odd (why not an even 40 or 50 gallons), but it allowed the buyer to be confident he was getting at least 40 gallons of oil after water settling out in the bottom of the barrel and shrinkage due to cooling and degassing.

7040 ounces. 1 gallon makes 128 ounces and 1 ounce is 0.0078 gallon in U.S measure. There are 8 ounces in a cup, 2 cups in a pint, 2 pints in a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon. That makes 128 ounces in a gallon US. In UK 20 ounces to the pint, 8 pints to the gallon which makes 160 ounces Imrerial measure.

For a steel "55 gallon" drum- standard drums have inside dimensions of 22.5 inches (572 mm) diameter and 33.5 inches (851 mm) height. These dimensions yield a volume of about 13,320 cubic inches or 57.66 US gallons (48.0 imp gal; 218.3 L), but they are commonly filled to about 200 liters.

How much cracked corn in a 55 gallon barrel?

A bushel of cracked corn is 56 lbs, which is about 10 gallons (or 2- 5 gallon buckets). So a 55 gallon barrel can hold approx. 5.5 bushels which approx. 308 lbs.

Why do they put 42 gallons of crued oil in a 55 gallon drum and not 55 gallons?

-- You can put as much or as little as you want to into a 55-gallon drum, as long as you don't exceed 55 gallons. -- A "barrel of oil" is not a 55-gallon drum. It's 35 imperial gallons, which is approximately 42.5 US gallons. (So the price of oil by the barrel is even higher than it sounds.)

How much gasoline does a barrel hold?

Depends on the size of the barrel. An oil barrel holds 42 gallons. But a 55 gallon barrel holds 55 gallons. Gasoline is not stored in barrels in the first place, it is stored in tanks which vary in size.

Would a stored 55 gallon barrel of water damage your house slab in your garage?

No, 55 gallons of water is about 450 lbs. A typical mid-size car places a load of 1,000 lbs. on each wheel. The footprint of a tire is smaller than the area of a barrel, so even an average-sized car is going to place a lot more pressure on the concrete slab than a 55-gallon barrel.

How much corn will 55 gallon drum hold?

A 55 gallon drum will hold approximately 390 lbs. of corn. If the drum has a funnel installed, may hold as much as 430 lbs.

How many gallons to the inch are in a 55 gallon drum?

I just created a measure stick for my rain barrel made from a 55 gallon food drum measuring 35.5 inches high. My gal per inch calc is 1.56, so 1 inch equals 1.56 gallons for my barrel. I put interval markings at every 10 gallons so my measurements were as follows: 10 gallons = 6.5" 20 gallons = 12.8" 30 gallons = 19.2" 40 gallons = 25.6" 50 gallons = 32" 55 gallons = 35.5" These are obviousely approximate and estimated for a perfectly tubular barrel, but they are close enough for my purposes.
