It does this by photosyntheses - using sunlight shining on plants to convert carbon dioxide in the atmosphere into carbon to build the plants' tissues and release oxygen as a waste product.

Agriculture also uses some of the carbon plant tissue (grass) to feed animals to produce more food. This process releases carbon back into the atmosphere but because this carbon cycle is a short-term one it is less pernicious than burning carbon fuels laid down in the ground millions of years ago.
