When the reactor fuel has been used for some time the fission products formed build up and do produce a significant amount of heat from their radioactivity, several percent of the total reactor output. When the reactor is shutdown, be it deliberately or as a result of some sort of incident, often due to an outgoing grid line fault, this heat is still there although the fission power has dropped to zero. To keep the reactor cooled some back up cooling is required and for safety this needs to be powered by back up diesels in case the grid connection has been lost.

Apart from that, the highly radioactive reactor core needs to be well shielded to allow the operating staff access for maintenance and repair, refuelling, etc.

Name an important atomic power station in maharashtra?

The Tarapur Atomic Power Station in Maharashtra is one of the important nuclear power plants in India. It was the country's first commercial nuclear power plant and plays a significant role in meeting Maharashtra's energy needs.

What is the role of the power station?

A power station is responsible for generating electricity using various energy sources like fossil fuels, nuclear, or renewables. It transforms energy into electrical power that can be distributed to homes, businesses, and industries through transmission lines. Power stations play a crucial role in meeting the energy demand of society and supporting economic activities.

Is nuclear energy used in Louisiana?

Yes, Louisiana does have two nuclear power plants: Waterford Steam Electric Station in Killona and River Bend Nuclear Generating Station in St. Francisville. These facilities generate electricity for the state and play a role in Louisiana's energy mix.

Why is nuclear science important?

Radioactivity is important for a number of reasons. It is the basis of both nuclear power and nuclear weapons. It allows for such things as medical X-ray examinations. Radioactive decay in the interior of the planet Earth is the source of the heat which causes the mantle to be liquid, and thereby causes continental drift, and earthquakes and volcanoes. None of those would exist without radioactivity. The study of radioactivity has provided scientists with many vital clues about the structure of atoms, and the behavior of subatomic particles.

What is the application of power station?

Power stations generate electricity using various energy sources such as coal, natural gas, nuclear, or renewable sources like solar and wind. They supply electricity to homes, businesses, and industries to power appliances, machinery, and equipment. Power stations play a crucial role in meeting the energy demands of society and supporting economic activities.

Where does nuclear energy come from in Australia?

There is only one nuclear power station in Sydney, which is used for research purposes. Other than this they play no role in providing power in Australia. Australia does however have the resources of uranium for it but export the majority of it to China.
