Well, light is detected by one of the photoreceptors in your eyes, specifically "rods". Photoreceptors are the receptors used for sight. So, the sense of sight can be used to determine an object's ability to reflect light.
For most people, red, green and blue, since normal eyes can't distinguish yellow (for example) from a combination of red and green. However, there are people out there who have 4 or even 5 "cones" in their eyes who CAN distinguish these colors, so it's not a perfect solution.
Eye colour is an interaction of several genes. Each gene has two alleles, we get one from each parent. Generally, dark pigment, melanin, is dominant over a paler pigment. Blue eyes have less melanin than darker eyes. However, it is not a simple inheritance like tongue rolling which is governed by one set of genes.
