Variables
D = Cylinder diameter [L].
Dbot = Cone bottom diameter [L].
Dtop = Cone top diameter [L].
h = Cone height [L].
L = Cylinder length [L].
T = Top width of liquid in cylinder [L].
y = Liquid depth in sphere or cylinder [L].
z = Horizontal to vertical side slope of cone. z<0 if Dtop
Ø = Angle representing how full the cylinder is [radians or degrees]. An empty cylinder has Ø=0o, a cylinder with Ø=180o is half full, and a cylinder with Ø=360o is completely full.
The numbers of milliliters, Liters, centiliters...on the side of the cylinder. Measure it at the line that the liquid is at.

The student measured the volume of a liquid in a graduated cylinder.
Density of an object is defined as mass per unit volume. Density - mass/volume (m/v) To find the density of a liquid using a graduated cylinder, you first of all take a measurement of the mass of the empty graduated cylinder (m1) and write it down. Lets say the mass is 0.5 kg (500 grams) Then fill the cylinder with the liquid that you want to find the density for and note down the volume (v). For easier calculation take 1 liter of the liquid. Now take a measurement of the mass of the cylinder with the liquid (m2) in it and write it down. Subtract the mass of the empty cylinder from the mass of the cylinder and liquid combined to get the mass of the liquid (m = m2 - m1). Now divide the result z by the volume (v) of the liquid. density = m/v
Density = mass/volume, so weigh a beaker, put your liquid in the beaker, weigh both beaker and liquid. With subtraction, find the weight of the liquid. Then, find the volume of the liquid with a graduated cylinder. Take mass/volume to find your density.

The volume of a liquid is what is measured in a graduated cylinder in milliliters.
To measure the volume of a liquid, you can use a graduated cylinder.
A graduated cylinder is used to measure liquid volume in milliliters, mL. When you place a liquid into a glass graduated cylinder, you will see that the "line" at the top of the column of liquid is actually curved downward. This is called the meniscus. When you measure the liquid volume, you record the volume in mL at the bottom of the meniscus.
