It depends on the density of the wood used and its thickness, or cross sectional area and the amount of overlap between boards. An average cladding quality softwood is around 24- 32 lbs per cu foot. Assuming approximately 3/4 of an inch thick siding thickness with no overlap this amount of timber would cover a 16 square foot of wall. So it would weigh approximately between 1.5 to 2 lbs per square foot.
the weight of the water will be more because the wood if floting on top if the water
45 lbs.
Because the weight of the wood is less than the weight of an equal volume of water. So when it's completely submerged, the upward buoyant force on it is greater than the downward gravitational force on it. The wood accelerates in the direction of the net force on it, exactly as one wood expect.
The weight would depend on if the desk is made of aluminum, iron, or wood. If wood, it would depend on the type of wood. As one example, pressed wood or particle board weighs more than other natural woods. Some natural woods are heavier than other natural woods, as well.

As a contractor, I would use stainless steel trim screws (available at Home Depot). Because they're stainless, they won't bleed, regardless of what species of wood you use. Depending on the style of siding (vertical or horizontal lap) you may have some small hole filling, prior to your final finishing of the siding.

Vinyl siding is a great option to use for your home. It is light weight, easy to clean, and better priced. If you would like to keep your home looking like wood without actually using wood, fiber cement siding would be best to use.
I believe the Dutch Lap is the one with the beveled edge at the top of the board, which creates shadow lines. The board lays flat on the vertical. Lap siding has flat boards overlapping each other on an angle. Beaded lap has a rounded, beaded edging detail at the bottom of the board. The boards lay on a slight angle overlapping each other.
YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO TRY THAT. VINYL SIDING HAS NO STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. THE WEIGHT OF THE MAILBOX ALONG WITH THE DAILY USAGE WILL EITHER DISFIGURE THE SIDING OR BREAK IT. EITHER MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WOOD SHEATHING BEHIND THE SIDING OR STUDS. DRILL HOLES THROUGH THE SIDING SO THE SCREWS DO NOT GRAB THE SIDING BUT GRAB WHAT IS BEHIND IT.
lengh times width, plus 10% for waste. If you're talking about lap siding.
