One type of "thing" which converts energy is an engine or motor. This converts chemical energy or electrical energy into useful kinetic energy. The previously posted information prior to this sentence is incorrect. The combustion (rapid expansion of gaseous environment) created during the oxidation process of the oxidizable fuel and oxidizer is the conversion process. The motion of the engines pistons as a result of that expansion transfers (does not convert) the kentic energy to the aparatus powered by the engine. The kenetic energy had to be present already to move the piston. It was the conversion of the electrical energy in the electrical motor powered by the battery, which initially turned the crankshalft of the engine, providing the compression necessary for the intensified explosion. The explosion did not require the engine since the same process could be replicated in a glass jar with an electrical spark and an oxidizable fuel and oxidizer with a resulting explosion creating kenetic energy which would undoubtably destroy the glass jar.
Also it should be noted: Any chemical and/or electro chemical reaction which causes either the expansion, contraction or magnetic properties of its surrounding environment to change can be said to convert potential energy to kenetic energy. The most obvious example would be that of a solar powered electro magnet causing an electic motor to turn. This case would be the conversion of potential enery to kenetic energy directly from a battery or other form of solar storage facility. The motor would turn forever theoretically if the solar power and storage system were always available.
The initial information is in fact correct. The person who gave the rest of the answer entirely missed the point of the word "useful".

Electric energy can be changed into other forms of energy by devices such as electric motors, which convert electrical energy into mechanical energy; light bulbs, which convert electrical energy into light and heat energy; and electric heaters, which convert electrical energy into thermal energy.
The two main kinds of energy that come from the sun are light energy (solar energy) and heat energy (thermal energy). Solar panels can convert the light energy into electricity, while the heat energy contributes to warming the Earth and driving various weather patterns.
Machines and living things can convert stored energy into different forms of energy such as mechanical, electrical, or heat energy, depending on the process or mechanism involved.
Things like wind, waves, sound, and electricity have moving energy. Moving energy is often referred to as kinetic energy and is associated with the movement of objects or particles.
Heat energy is, to an extent, unusable energy. If you have a heat DIFFERENCE, you can convert part of the heat energy - but only part of it - to other kinds of energy. That part, you can of course convert to practically any other type of energy.
Those units measure different kinds of things. You can't convert one to the other.

Electrical because when it lets out it's energy it works electrical things such as computers, cell phones, and lots of other things!
All kinds of energy can be used to heat things either directly or indirectly. Solar energy can be used to heat things directly. water fall energy or wind energy can be used to heat things through electricity production that in its turn can heat things.
