A boat floats because it displaces water... put a boat in the water and it sinks into the surface of the water...
the part of the boat beneath water level pushes water out of the way.
When the weight of the water pushed out of the way is the same as the weight of the boat, the boat can sink no further.


Tho made of steel or other heavy materials, naval architects calculate displacement ( the weight of water the ship's hull pushes out of the way ) as long as the ship weighs Less than the water it displaces, it will safely float.


The difference between the weight of the boat and the weight of water it displaces will determine how much Cargo a boat can carry.
