Heat may simply permeate through insulating rock, and subsequently radiate into space. As pressure builds up from the motion of plates riding on convection currents within the mantle, energy release will frequently take the form of earth quakes--violent motions of the earth as one plate slips or shifts against another. A vivid image of this exists in IRIS seismic data which outlines the "Ring of Fire."

Chemical energy is released in a glow stick through a chemical reaction between the chemicals inside the stick. This reaction produces light energy in the form of visible light.
A car engine converting chemical energy to mechanical energy, which produces heat and sound during combustion. The movement of the car generates kinetic energy and heat while friction produces sound energy.
The two forms of energy released during a fire burning are heat energy and light energy. Heat energy contributes to raising the temperature of the surrounding area, while light energy produces the glow and flames that are visible.
Fossil fuels contain potential chemical energy, which is released by combination with oxygen. Uranium contains potential energy which can be released by splitting the atomic nucleus, this results in a loss of mass which produces a burst of energy through the relation E = mc2. This energy drives the fission fragments apart, they are then slowed by the surrounding uranium and this produces heat or thermal energy.
The stick of a match contains chemical energy, which is released when the match is struck, causing a chemical reaction that produces heat and light.
Earths energy is released when there is too much heat inside of Earth and volcano's erupt.

Earthquake energy is released at the hypocenter, which is the exact location within the Earth's crust where the seismic rupture begins. This release of energy produces seismic waves that propagate outward in all directions, causing the ground shaking and damage associated with earthquakes.

The word magnitude (in the context of earthquakes) is used to describe the amount of energy released when one occurs.
It is caused by the rotation of earth.
Does it have anything to do with, Magnetised plumes being sucked out of the earths core? It`s a form of energy that happens when Plasma comes through a hole in Earths Magnetosphere, and enters through the North or South poles. Not saying it is. Just a guess.
Faults DO NOT produce earthquakes, faults are produced by earthquakes. This means that earthquake loci are centered on and along faults. The energy released by an earthquake is the strain energy built up as a result of plate tectonic forces. Some faults move easily and thus no strain energy builds up.
Seismic waves are the forms of energy produced by an earthquake.
