Electrons being free to move, they carry current through metal. But as electrons have negative charge they move right from negative end to positive end. But conventionally we consider electric current has to flow from +ve end to -ve end. Hence conventional current is always opposite to the direction of flow of electrons.

As we know atom consist of nucleus (protons and neutrons) and electrons revolving around nucleus. Every moving particle has some energy so as the electrons that's why they have specific energy levels and specific orbits around nucleus. Now think nucleus as a Baseball's ball. if we take bunch of these and put it in the carton upto the brim of carton all these balls get arranged in specific way leaving some space between them due to there spherical nature.in metal atoms are arranged in the same way

nucleus being ball electron being in vacant space.due to bunch of atoms energy that binds electrons to nucleus get lowered and they are set free in the metal piece.(remember they cannot escape from metal)when electricity is applied

electrons being charged move against direction of electricity .So actually electrons are the particles who moves.

Current is caused by the motion of electrons in metals and other conductors. Metals contain mobile, or free, electrons that are not bound to any one metal atom.

However, in diagrams, one draws the "path" of current as the flow of positive charges.
