yes heating furnace use coal and wood to heat and work.Because you cannot get such high temperature without that .
I finally had the repairman to fix the furnace, the heat it produced was spasmodic.
If the furnace is a single stage heat model. Use R,W and G at the stat and the furnace. This info is in the Installation Manual. R is 24 volt hot,W is heat and G is fan.

The only other two-phase furnace would be a two-phase electric (as opposed to a three-phase electrical furnace.) But I don't think you're asking about 2 vs 3 phase electrical furnace systems... Those are quite rare.
