temporary magnets
Incorrect, it's electromagnetic.
Electromagnets are produced by running electric current through a soft iron core. Soft iron enhances the magnetic properties and creates a temporary magnetism as long as the current flows through the core.
The outer electrons in a metallic bar all allign themselves within the bar to generate a single field with magnetic properties. The element, Iron, have this property but it is also seen in other metals in the Periodic Table.
When current is run through a soft iron core, an electromagnet is produced. This type of magnet can be turned on and off by controlling the flow of electricity. Soft iron cores are often used in electromagnets because they can quickly magnetize and demagnetize.
A flow of electrical charges running through a medium is known as an electrical current.
Electric currents can create a magnet by running through a coil of wire, which generates a magnetic field. This process is known as electromagnetism.

Nothing is produced just by putting electric current through a soft iron core. It needs wire to be be wound around it in a certain fashion, then it may produce direct current.
Pulling the engine's start cord turns the flywheel. The flywheel has a magnet or magnets on it that create electrical charge as the flywheel turns, causing them to pass other magnets. The electrical charge travels to the spark plug and starts the engine. Once the engine is running, the inertia created by the flywheel's turning has enough momentum to keep the engine's crankshaft turning between the piston's power strokes. During operation, the flywheel's magnets also induce voltage in the armature to keep the spark plug firing. Those magnets are called a Magneto ignition.

The convection currents running through the asthenosphere are widely believed to be the source of movement of the tectonic plates.

Hydroelectric power is produced by running water.
Running it through sand, using specialized magnets, and boiling it.
