Friction is a force. I'll get back to that.

Weight, which is usually measured in pounds or ounces or grams (depending on where you live or what you're measuring), has an official (SI) unit of newtons. An object's weight depends on the gravity affecting that object. (You probably know that you weigh less on the Moon than you do on Earth.)

Gravity, which is a force, is consequently measured in newtons, just like weight. All forces are measured in newtons.

Therefore, friction, which is a force, is measured in newtons.

well friction is measured in a vary of ways like it can be measured by using spring measure or it can be measured in testing by pushing a object across the floor and measuring the time it took and turn that into newtons.

Friction is a force, so it should be measured in newton.

There is also a "coefficient of friction", a dimensionless constant that depends on the two materials that are in contact. It is dimensionless because it is the ration between two forces.

Force of friction equals coefficient of friction times normal force. (F = µ × N)

The force of friction (F) between an object and a surface is equal to a number called the coefficient of friction (µ) times the normal force (N) the object exerts directly on the surface. The coefficient of fiction for many common materials is available in physics and engineering textbooks. In the case of a perpendicular object on a level surface, the normal force the object exerts is equal to the weight of the object, but on an inclined surface it is less because only a fraction of the object's weight pushes directly into the surface. The measurement can be made in whatever units are used for the weight of the object.

friction is dimensionless. it is normally written as coefficient of friction Cfr . which is a value typically less than one. for example if the Cfr of a block = 0.5 and 100N is applied on the block then it would require 50N to move it.

The coefficients of friction, static and kinetic, are unit-less. However, when applied to formulae, you will get an answer in Newtons.

How can friction be positive and negative?

Friction can be negative or positive depending on the direction in which your measures are positive.

What is the SI unit for Friction?

[Simple Explanation]As friction is a force and the S.I. unit of force is Newton, the S.I. unit of friction is Newton.[Derivative Explanation]F=µN,where F is Frictional force,µ is coefficient of friction, and N is net normal reaction.N = -mgwhere mg is gravitational force whose SI unit is Newton.-(1)Coefficient of friction is dimensionless. -(2)From (1) and (2), SI unit of F = SI unit of N x SI unit of µ = NewtonHence SI of Friction is Newton.
