Almost everything has potential energy and that can increase and decrease depending on the objects position and mass. First off you need some type of power which is energy (you need more energy in than you want to put on the object that is getting work done on it, because the mechanical energy will transform into other types such as heat, light, and sound.) It also depends on what type of machine you are talking about simple, or advanced machine. Maybe you could refine what type of machine and then I could make the answer even more clear. Sorry for the simple answer I just don't have enough background knowledge to give a more in-depth answer.
It's not exactly "extra". It's a part of the energy that you put INTO the machine in order to get the work done. Machines always do LESS work than the energy you put into them, and the rest turns into heat. You always lose some. That's just the way things work.
An energy source is needed to provide electrical energy to the circuit components such as resistors, capacitors, and bulbs. Without an energy source, there would be no electrical current flowing through the circuit, and no power for the devices to operate.
Energy is the capacity to do work. In order for force to do work, there must be a transfer or transformation of energy within a system. So, energy is needed for force to perform work.
The three energies typically needed to clean dishes are physical energy for scrubbing and lifting, thermal energy for heating water to the appropriate temperature, and chemical energy from dish soap to break down grease and food particles.
In a fan, electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy in order to move air. The electric motor within the fan converts the electrical energy into the kinetic energy needed to rotate the blades and create airflow.
concrete... and space... and machines to do the work.
It shows the energy requirements needed in order for a reaction to occur.
In order to move molecules in your kidneys your body needs energy. Energy is needed for every function that your body performs.

Energy trading is necessary in order to move energy from where it is produced to where it is needed. Wholesale energy may be traded as energy itself or in its physical form, for example natural gas.

Activation Energy is the required energy needed in order for a chemical reaction to start.

Oxygen
Activation energy is the least amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction. It is used to activate atoms or molecules in order for them to begin a chemical reaction.
