When is energy negative?

Because of the laws of enthalpy and entropy, free energy is always increasing. However, in endothermic reactions, or chemical reactions that require energy to occur, net free energy is negative because the energy is "lost" to the environment as it is bonded in the reaction.

Energy is often defined in reference to something else, and the sign of the energy is a function which direction is flowing. If energy (heat) flows from a system to the environment, the enthalpy change is negative (exothermic), whereas if energy flows from the environment to the system, the enthalpy change is positive (endothermic).

Energy is actually positive or zero. However, in some cases only a difference in energy matters. This is the case with gravitational potential energy. There is no way (or it isn't practical?) to establish the "real" or "absolute" amount of potential energy; instead, what is done is that some point is arbitrarily defined to have zero energy. In that case, any object that goes above this point will have positive potential energy (as compared to the reference height), and a lower point will have a negative potential energy (again, compared to the reference height). Often, in astronomy, a point at an infinite distance is (arbitrarily) assign zero potential energy; in this case, any object nearer than infinity will have a negative potential energy. (Note that it takes only a finite amount of energy to move an object to an infinite distance from another, due to the fact that gravitation decreases with distance.)

If the free energy associated with a reaction is negative, that means the reaction is spontaneous in nature and is thermodynamically feasible.Such a reaction is exothermic and energy is released in it.
