Nobody really knows when rust was first discovered. Most likely whenever somebody was first using or experimenting with iron or any other material that will oxidize or rust eventually. Hope i was help (:

∙ 12y agoRust-preventing paint for cast iron was invented about 1848 by John Rendall, a Torquay chemist, using ochre from his father-in-law's (Richard Wolston) mine in Furzeham, Brixham, Devon. A mixture of ochre and linseed oil was the basis of the world's first rust-preventing paint, manufactured by the Torbay Paint Factory. It was used by Brunel and became famous all over the world.
