Percussion instruments can be categorized into two main groups: pitched percussion and unpitched percussion. Pitched percussion instruments produce definite pitches, such as xylophones and marimbas, while unpitched percussion instruments produce indefinite pitches, such as drums and cymbals.

The exact origins of the triangle instrument are unknown, but a number of paintings from the Middle Ages depict the instrument being played by angels, which has led to the belief that it played some part in church services at that time. Other paintings show it being used in folk bands. The triangle started appearing in marching bands as early as the 1700s.

The percussion cap was first invented by the Scotsman Reverend A Forsythe in 1803. His main reason for developing the system was to provide instant ignition to aid in the hunting of game birds (Forsyth was an avid duck hunter). His first percussion arm was of course a shotgun. Although patented in 1803 the percussion cap was not utilised on military arms for another 30 years.
The Incas invented many wind and percussion instruments. The flute was a popular instrument.
Maracas are percussion instruments, and can be compared to rattles. They were invented by Native Americans in Puerto Rico.
Percussion caps were invented in the 1830's, with patents granted earlier in the 1800's. The first military application for percussion caps on muskets was in about 1842. By the Mexican War of 1846-1848, percussion cap firing muskets/rifles became general issue.
