Vibrations from a collision of some sort are carried through a medium such as the atmosphere. You will see a similar effect by throwing a rock into a body of water, the energy of the collision will create waves.

It usually arises from the kinetic energy of something moving, which creates pressure waves, that travel and disperse slowly. Sound loses energy until it is all dissapated. That energy is lost to heat. Sound warms things up, a tiny bit.
